or other interesting presentations.
July 22, 5:30 - 7:30
Jerry Clifford
“The Physics of Art”
at SCIART Gallery
Why is Mona Lisa's smile so elusive? Why are Renoir's portraits so
compelling and Matisse's colors so unique? Is there some scientific
insight into these masters’ works that might help us understand their
techniques? Jerry Clifford, who teaches "The Science of Art"
at CSUCI, will provide some observations for artists and patrons at
Studio Channel Islands Art Center. He will discuss the nature of light
and the basis and use of color in images. He will talk about visual
perception and show how we form visual images. Through classical and
modern artwork, he will show how artists, usually through skilled observation
rather than scientific training, manipulate light and color. The presentation
will help artists understand, design, appreciate, and possibly improve
their artistic works.
Jerry Clifford has taught the Physics of Art for three years at CSUCI.
As a lecturer in Applied Physics, he has also taught Physics of Music,
How Things Work, Science & Conscience, Introduction to Our Solar
System, and the Stars and Beyond. For the Extended University, he has
taught at the Osher Life-long Learning Institute for six years. Jerry
has a PhD in Nuclear Physics from Iowa State University and spent thirty
years doing experimental research, mostly for government-sponsored programs.
Members $10/ non-members $15/ free to SCIART Docents.
More of our Mentors to Many dates will be announced. SCIART members can
reserve the entire series of seven presentations for a reduced rate of
$125.
For non-members, the fee is $175.
