Intro to Hand Spindling
Come and learn to use a drop spindle to spin wool into yarn. It’s
a fun way to learn the basics of beginning spinning, from the
fiber to the twist in making yarn.
Ability level: Beginner.

Beginning Weaving on
the 4 Harness Loom*
If you’ve decided to learn to weave on a 4 harness loom, this
is the class for you. You will learn the basics of weaving by
preparing the warp, warping your loom from front to back, weaving
your sampler and finishing the fabric. Learn to weave and receive
many weaving tips during the workshop. You will receive a booklet
with complete instructions for setting up and weaving your project
along with a goody bag of weaving supplies.
Ability level – beginner.
$125 + $25 materials fee.

Appalachian Back Pack
Learn to weave a back pack that resembles what the Appalachian
Indians used to gather their food or carry their belongings. You
will use different reeds to create a beautiful useable back pack..

Weave a Rayon Chenille Scarf
Learn about challenges of working with rayon chenille and ways
to overcome some of the difficulties. Class will alternate between
lecture and hands-on activity as we discuss the process and then
go about weaving our scarves. If you do not have your own 4- harness
loom, you can rent one from us.
Ability level: MUST know how to weave

Beginning Wheel Spinning
Learn the basics of spinning using a spinning wheel to spin wool
into yarn. An amazing tool, the spinning wheel (using a foot treadle),
puts the twist in the wool to make yarn and winds the yarn onto
a bobbin.
Ability level – Beginner.

Patterned Double Weave
Learn the structure and design of double weave pattern. In this
project we will make a number of two color, two structure double
weave patterns on a 4-harness loom. You will receive a booklet
with complete instructions for setting up and weaving your project.

Using wool and felting needles, create a

About the Weaving Instructors:

When Deborah Jarchow discovered weaving in 1996, her life-long love
of fiber, texture, and color came together. She is a full-time weaver
who has created hundreds of garments and accessories for sale and
exhibition across the country. Although known mostly for her success
with rayon chenille wearable art, she weaves many different one-of-a-kind
items including large scale wall pieces.
Deborah has won numerous awards and has written articles for Handwoven
Magazine. Since 2005 she has been an Artist-in-Residence, a teacher,
and weaver at Studio Channel Islands Art Center in Camarillo, CA.
Deborah Jarchow has been very instrumental in helping to develop
the Fiber Art Studio at the center.
Gerri Johnson-McMillin has been creating fiber art since 1972. Although
her main interest is basketry, she does enjoy weaving and knotting
along with other fiber art. Gerri is known for her Fishbone Vessels
and Knotted Fiber Sculptures. She is an international and national
exhibiting artist and has her work in the permanent collections
of the Long Beach Museum of Art and Ventura County Museum. Her work
can also be seen in several books. Since 1999, Gerri has been an
Artist-in-Residence at Studio Channel Islands Art Center and has
been very instrumental in developing the Fiber Art Studio at the
Center. Gerri teaches basketry and other fiber related workshops.
