Nshan Melkonian

My name represents freedom, that is what inspires my art, there are no boundaries in my creativity. I am a young aspiring artist out of high school, where I received recognition early on for my artistic talent. I capture every detail and emotion in my portraits as my creative designs capture the essence of simplicity. I come from an artistic heritage, and from the cradle I listened to classical music and observed great artists on the walls of my nursery and walked the museums of Los Angeles, California. My love of original artists and...

Savanna Ryan, a student from Ventura College, received the 2014 Studio Channel Islands Art Center Award for Excellence in Art Studies. “My work is about blending my love of photography and being a makeup artist. I have always loved to work with my hands. It’s nice to be able to control the outcome of my photographs. I plan to continue my “Dissolve” series as well as starting new projects that combine my loves of makeup and photography. I will continue showing my work in local galleries. I don’t plan on ever...

Dear Karin, I am a current member artist of Studio Channel Islands Art Center, though I live primarily in Los Angeles. We have a second home in Oxnard, which we’ve enjoyed since 2000. It was not long after our residency in Oxnard that I discovered Studio Channel Islands, while it was on the campus of Cal State University, Channel Islands. It was through my participation in juried member art exhibits there that I got the courage, as a middle-aged adult studying painting at the Art Center College of Design, to begin exhibiting my work. It...

Imaginary Minds

The opening reception for Studio Channel Islands Art Center April 2013 exhibition, Imaginary Minds, invited the students and faculty of Oxnard College to create something in a style that is uniquely their own. The reception was an exciting experience for everyone who attended, as for many students this was their first show in a professional gallery. We were especially excited about this month’s exhibition because the gallery had the special privilege to award our annual $1,000 Award for Excellence Scholarship to Donna Espinoza, who entered...

Live from the Studios-Maggie Kildee

Back at the Studios, I visited with sculptor Maggie Kildee in studio A2 where she creates her wonderful terra cotta “Uppity Women”. These are women who celebrate who they are, no matter their size or shape, who do what they want to do and are not worried about how they look doing it. Ah, what a great concept and so hard to achieve. These sculptures never fail to bring a smile to the viewer’s face and are an inspiration to all women, as is the artist herself. Maggie turned to art full time after a long career teaching and...

Live from the Studios — Rich Brimer

Today’s featured artist in Rich Brimer in Studio A1, our past President of Studio Channel Islands, and an accomplished oil painter working on a new piece for an upcoming show with Carol Henry in Monterey, CA. This piece shows the kelp found around Santa Barbara Island, one of the Channel Islands nearby, photographed on one of Rich’s regular boat trip to the islands. It will be featured in the “Acqua Calda” event on Feb. 13, a salon of culinary and visual art during which the artist prepare a gourmet feast for the...

Artists’ Beer Garden

Our Beer Garden at the Summer Market was a success, due to the tasty “Big Ass Red” served by The LAB Brewery. Join us for an encore during Fiesta Camarillo on Friday, July 13, and Saturday, July 14, at the artists’ studios. Bring your own food and enjoy good beer (or wine) & company. We’ll tap the barrel at 3pm....
