Imaginary Minds
The opening reception for Studio Channel Islands Art Center April 2013 exhibition, Imaginary Minds, invited the students and faculty of Oxnard College to create something in a style that is uniquely their own. The reception was an exciting experience for everyone who attended, as for many students this was their first show in a professional gallery. We were especially excited about this month’s exhibition because the gallery had the special privilege to award our annual $1,000 Award for Excellence Scholarship to Donna Espinoza, who entered...

Back at the Studios, I visited with sculptor Maggie Kildee in studio A2 where she creates her wonderful terra cotta “Uppity Women”. These are women who celebrate who they are, no matter their size or shape, who do what they want to do and are not worried about how they look doing it. Ah, what a great concept and so hard to achieve. These sculptures never fail to bring a smile to the viewer’s face and are an inspiration to all women, as is the artist herself. Maggie turned to art full time after a long career teaching and...

Today’s featured artist in Rich Brimer in Studio A1, our past President of Studio Channel Islands, and an accomplished oil painter working on a new piece for an upcoming show with Carol Henry in Monterey, CA. “I’m thrilled and speechless,” Sherron said. He smiled for photos with his award. Sherron blossomed as an artist this year in Gerald Swigger’s printmaking class at Moorpark College. “Printmaking is really growing on me,” he said. “I’ll invest (the award) in more supplies to make more prints.” Committee members Gerd Koch, Tom McMillin and Bob Privitt from Studio Channel Islands Art Center selected Sherron for the award. “There’s marvelous sense of whimsy and playfulness,” said Koch of Sherron’s prints. “We were so...

Usually taking art off gallery walls is frowned upon, but not at Studio Channel Islands Art Center’s “100 for 100” fundraiser on March 18 in Old Town Camarillo. Artists-in-residence donated over 100 pieces to be raffled off at the annual event. “I’ve been coming every year. The quality of the art here is so superior. It’s so generous of the artists to give up these priceless works,” said Peg Hicks-Moore. Tickets were sold in advance for $100 each. Guests received a ticket with their name on it as they arrived at the art gallery....

There will be four groups of drawings based on the time of...
